U.S. President Donald Trump said there is a possibility of resuming negotiations with Iran in Pakistan on Friday, after the ceasefire was extended indefinitely.

“It’s possible,” Trump told The New York Post when asked about reports from Islamabad pointing to a potential resumption of peace talks within the next 36 to 72 hours.

Trump announced on Tuesday his decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely until the Islamic Republic’s government— which he described as divided—presents a unified proposal for an agreement.

The Republican leader made the decision just hours before the existing ceasefire was set to expire, despite having said earlier the same day that he did not intend to extend it and was prepared to resume “bombings” against Iran.

Iran said it would return to the negotiating table with the United States once “necessary and reasonable conditions” are met, adding that the country is prepared to defend itself in the event of further attacks.

Despite the ceasefire, Iran continues to largely block the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil trade, while the United States maintains a naval blockade on Iranian vessels and ports.
