Argentina could reach oil production of 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2026, up from the current level of just over 850,000 bpd, driven by increased activity in the Vaca Muerta shale formation, Energy Secretary Daniel González said.

“I think we will hit one million barrels of oil this year; it is an unthinkable milestone for Argentina,” González said at a conference organized by AmCham, the American Chamber of Commerce in Argentina.

Thanks to higher output in Vaca Muerta and significant infrastructure investments, Argentina aims to reduce its reliance on gas imports and improve its energy trade balance surplus, which is expected to exceed $10 billion in 2026.
