Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras and its partners will invest around $1.5 billion to implement decarbonization technology in one of its fields, informed the company's CEO, Jean Paul Prates.

Petrobras will launch a pilot project of the high-pressure oil and gas separation technology, known as HISEP, before the end of 2028 in the Mero field, located in the pre-salt zone of the Santos Basin.

HISEP reduces carbon emissions by re-injecting carbon dioxide into the reservoir, according to the company.

The Mero field is operated by Petrobras in partnership with Shell, French company TotalEnergies, Chinese companies CNPC and CNOOC, and Pre-Sal Petroleo SA-PPSA.

If successful, the technology could be applied in other oil fields, reducing the company's carbon emissions.
